I have written or edited some thirty books, the majority on modern Italian history.  Most recently they included Whispering city: Rome and its histories (Yale UP, 2011); Italian Venice: a history (Yale UP, 2014); Claretta: Mussolini's last lover (Yale UP, 2017) and, most recently Mussolini and the eclipse of Italian Fascism: from dictatorship to populism.

 

Research Interests

Under lockdown, I have written another MSS, the first 'book' that I have done for many years without a contract beforehand. It is tentatively entitled Politics, murder and love in an Italian family: the Amendolas 1880-1980. We shall have to see its fate.
